We don’t choose our pets; they choose us. You know, they are like little angels who are always near. That was our little angel, Skretik.
I remember the day I first saw him. I went into a pet store to look at the animals. I didn’t plan to buy a rabbit, but when I walked past the guinea pigs, I saw him. I couldn’t forget him after that. Those big eyes, his little white tail, and the cute ears that stole my heart — they all settled in my heart. My husband gave me Skret for New Year. He lived with us for 13 full years! Anyone who says they don’t live long doesn’t understand animals.
All that time, Skretik was our favorite, always happy to see us, and he loved sweets, as funny as that sounds. He was a member of our family, very kind and gentle. He even learned a few commands and never left any of our guests indifferent.
But time, unfortunately, is a cruel thing; it passes quickly and spares no one. Skretik lost his sight early on, and the vet said his eyes couldn’t adapt after so many years of life. He lived another year blind. Then seizures began. When we took our beloved pet to the clinic, we found out that our rabbit specialist was now in the army, and appointments with other rabbit specialists in our city were 5–7 days away.
Skretik was very strong. When he could no longer get up, he would use his paws to ask me for food or water. He fought for his life for three days. That’s how he passed away, in my arms. My husband and I cried a lot. But we understood it was time to say goodbye, though we didn’t want him to leave us forever.
On the internet, I found the company “Spogad.” I am very grateful to them — without their support at every stage, the pain of loss would have been even greater. Special thanks to manager Anton, who came the same day and helped us.
